High Quality of Life

One of the first things to note when considering a move to a new area is the quality of life. Luckily, residents feel safe and welcome in Wilson – one of the many perks of living in a small town and knowing your neighbors and the area well. With a mild climate all year round, a low crime rate, and a very affordable cost of living, Wilson is the perfect place to settle down and start a family, or invest in property and start your career as a young adult (Smith & Associates). The cost of living in Wilson is 22.0% lower than the U.S. average, making it a great place to buy a home and live.

Outdoor Activities

With such great weather, residents of Wilson can enjoy one of the many outdoor activities right at their fingertips. In Wilson, you can watch your children in the Little League championship at our baseball stadium on Friday night, take a day trip to one of the nearby beaches on Saturday, and spend your Sunday playing disc golf or fishing at Lake Wilson just down the road.

Connectivity - Greenlight Wilson, NC

If you’d rather stay indoors, another perk of living in Wilson is the world-class broadband system. Wilson, NC is North Carolina’s first fiber optic gigabit internet city, which means their system, Greenlight, allows connections of up to a Gigabit per second – about 100 times faster than the average high-speed Internet connection. In addition to fast internet speeds, Greenlight also provides public wifi for its Wilson residents in historic downtown Wilson, at the Amtrak train station, and Gillette Athletic Complex. Out-of-state fans can tune into games from the live streams supported by Greenlight, and you’ll never have to worry about hitting your data limit while shopping around downtown and attending sporting events as a family. The city of Wilson even expanded their free wifi spots in 2020 to accommodate the growing need for remote learning spots. Having free wifi and fast internet speeds improves the quality of life of all residents and seeks to build a more inclusive environment where everyone can get the bandwidth they need.

Things to Do in Wilson, NC

City History & Museums

One of the most popular attractions that put Wilson on the map is its giant kinetic sculptures called whirligigs. It all began when a man named Vollis Simpson started building whirligigs at his family farm and people began to travel from all over the country just to see them (WilsonWhirligigPark.Org). As Simpson aged and couldn’t care for his sculptures as they endured weather from all seasons, it became clear that the people of Wilson needed to step in. Simpsons creations brought a historic charm to the city and a great economic success – tourism. The town took on the huge project of relocating and restoring the whirligigs to their current location, a popular tourist spot in Historic Downtown Wilson called Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park and Museum. The park is a great place for families to hang out or learn a little about North Carolina history, and it brings more than 35,000 tourists per year (Discover Wilson).

Even after visiting the whirligigs, there’s still so much fun to be had in Wilson. Your children will love Imagination Station Science & History Museum, where they can play with interactive exhibits and continue their learning after school or in the summer. Our sports fans can visit the North Carolina Baseball Museum and check out the memorabilia from local baseball stars and North Carolina native baseball players.

Local Attractions

The Wilson Botanical Garden is a local favorite in this charming town. Open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk, the botanical garden provides fun for all ages, but The Children's Secret Garden is a must-see. Your children will love exploring the magical play areas in this award-winning garden!

We’ve mentioned the Gillette Athletic Complex, famous for its free and fast wifi, but also home to many sports teams and family fun. The complex features 8 soccer fields, 4 baseball and softball fields, a multi-purpose and t-ball field, walkways, a 5k trail, a disc golf practice course, several shelters, a children’s playground, grills, and more. Gillette is a fantastic perk to living in Wilson, and it is well-loved by all the locals and their families – it also sits only about 5 miles away from 1158 Place.

Culture and Community

Wilson's sense of community and vibrant culture are evident in its numerous festivals and events. The annual North Carolina Whirligig Festival celebrates the town’s unique artistic heritage with live music, food vendors, and craft stalls, making it a family favorite. Additionally, Wilson’s downtown area is rich with cultural experiences, from art galleries showcasing local artists to theaters hosting performances and films.
